City Manager to speak at MHNA meeting on April 20

Des Moines City Manager Scott Sanders will be our featured guest speaker when the Merle Hay Neighborhood Association hosts its quarterly membership meeting at 6:30 p.m. this Thursday, April 20, at the Northwest Community Center, 5110 Franklin Ave. We’ll also hear about plans for a proposed commercial/retail development in the vicinity of 3400 Merle Hay Road, among other neighborhood updates.

2017 Membership dues are payable now

MHNA membership dues for 2017 are payable now. Costs for membership are as follows:

  • Individual: $15
  • Couple: $30
  • Business: $30
  • Church or School: $10

MHNA membership is open to anyone who lives, rents, or owns property, and to businesses within the neighborhood boundaries. Non-residents may join, though they may not vote. MHNA is a 501 (c)(3) non-profit organization. Dues and donations are tax-deductible, and can be paid in person at association meetings, or mailed to our post office box: P.O. Box 31036, Des Moines, IA 50310.

Join us on January 19 for MHNA’s Annual Meeting!

The Merle Hay Neighborhood Association will host its annual meeting at 6:30 p.m. on Thursday, January 19, at the Northwest Community Center, 5110 Franklin Ave. Refreshments will be provided.

Greg Heid, director of the Des Moines Public Library system, will be our guest speaker.
As always, there will be public safety updates and the latest neighborhood news. We also welcome discussion about neighborhood goals for 2017.

Lastly, the 2016 annual report will be given, and officer and board elections will be held.

We look forward to seeing lots of neighbors on January 19. Please spread the word!

MHNA Quarterly Meeting, Annual Supper, & Food/Clothing Drive on Oct. 20!

Please join MHNA for our quarterly meeting, annual soup supper, and food and clothing drive at 6 p.m. on Thursday, October 20, at the Northwest Community Center, 5110 Franklin Ave. We will be joined by a Neighborhood Finance Corp staff member and will announce another guest speaker in the near future.

The soup supper will begin at 6 p.m. The meeting will start at approximately 6:30. If you would like to bring soup, another dish, or dessert, please contact April Beck by email at hawkifan87@yahoo.com, or 515.707.6386.

We will also collect food donations for the less fortunate at our October 20 meeting. The food we collect will be donated to the Des Moines Area Religious Council’s Food Pantry Program. For more information about the most-needed food items, please visit: https://www.dmarcunited.org/movethefood/

Once again this year, we will collect winter clothing for elementary school children in the Merle Hay neighborhood. Please help us “Keep the Kids Warm!” We will collect money, coats, boots, stocking hats, gloves, and mittens. We plan to deliver the clothing donations in November.
